The Olmec Civilization settled on the Gulf of Mexico. The Olmec civilization is primarily known for their art, sculpture, and agriculture.
The slash and burn technique was most commonly seen in the region. This clears the land for planting as the ashes act as a fertilizer. This allowed them to plant crops such as beans, squash, manioc, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes. Maize was a primary ingredient in the diet as well. Maize was very important to the civilization as one of the gods is associated with it. Fish were also an important part of their diet. Usually using nearby lakes and rivers to receive the fish.
The tools they used primarily from stone age technology. Using whatever they could obtain to create these tools. Being extremely skilled in pottery they made plates and containers to store and keep food.
The olmec civilization was not a particularly advanced one as they continually used stone to create structures. The things that they we skilled at included pottery. In which they used to create food storage. Art, used for their religion. Sculpture allowing them to make structures out of rock. Finally architecture in which they used to create significant structures in Central America.
